Raymond Bernard Arends, son of Conrad M. and Dora (Dingworth) Arends, was born April 24, 1921 at Raeville, Nebraska. He moved with his family to St. Libory, Nebraska where he attended school through the 8th grade. Before entering the service he worked for a time at the Civilian Conservation Corp in South Dakota. On September 1, 1948 he enlisted in the United States Army serving until being honorably discharged on June 14, 1951.
On November 20, 1952 Ray was united in marriage to Caroline Ann Keuter at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Petersburg. Ray then began working as an auto mechanic for his brother Conrad and eventually bought him out. His wife Caroline passed away from cancer on March 28, 1987 at the age of 52. Ray then continued to work until his health no longer permitted.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the American Legion Post #334 of Petersburg, Petersburg Community Club and also volunteered as a fireman in Petersburg for 32 years serving as fire chief for many of those.
