Marsha "Mattie" Phay Bryan was born in the Spring Hill Community in Pickens County, Alabama in 1888 to Joseph H. Bryan and Safronia Josephine Acker, although at the time of her birth her father had passed away. Her grandparents were William S. Bryan and Sarah Ellis and Jackson B. Acker and Margaret Lucinda Crime, all of Pickens County. She was the sister of Richard Adolphus Bryan, Maggie Bryan Adams, and Lorado Bryan Lowry.
Before her birth Mattie's parents moved from Alabama to Mississippi and then for about ten years lived in Gonzales County, Texas. However, in 1888 Mattie's father Joseph died in Gonzalez and her mother moved the family back to Pickens County, Alabama to give birth to Mattie. Then tragically, in 1895 Mattie was orphaned, along with her sisters and brother, at the age of seven when her mother died suddenly. She and her sisters were taken in by her aunt Annie Acker Gates and they were moved to Mississippi. Around 1900 she lived with her sister Lorado and her husband Pickens Lowry in Shreveport, Louisiana.
In 1905 Mattie attended Radnor College for women in Nashville, Tennessee and for a while lived in Deerbrook, MS. In her twenties she came to Texas to be near her sisters who had moved to Richmond, Texas. Mattie mostly lived in nearby Houston earning a living as an insurance salesperson and underwriter. She never married and was what is considered today to be a career woman. She was always an independent person and supported herself and according to her sisters, was always trying some money-making scheme.
In 1965 she died in the state hospital in Austin, Texas and was buried with her sisters and brothers-in-law in Richmond, Texas.
