Richard Adolphus Bryan was born on May 11, 1880, the son of Joseph H. Bryan and Safronia Josephine Acker. He was named after his uncle, Richard Adolphus Bryan. His paternal grandparents were William S. Bryan and Sarah Ellis. His maternal grandparents were Jackson B. Acker and Lucinda Crime. He was the brother of Maggie Bryan Adams, Lorado Bryan Lowry, and Martha Phay Bryan.
Richard's family were originally from near Carrollton, Alabama then later Columbus, Mississippi. Richard, however was born in Gonzales, Texas when his father, mother, and brother-in-law lived there for a few years. After his father's untimely death in Texas sometime around 1890, his mother moved the family back to Columbus, Mississippi to be with family. In 1896 Richard's mother Josephine suddenly died when he was sixteen and he was orphaned, along with his sisters. They were all taken in by their aunt, Annie Acker Gates to be raised. When his sisters became older they eventually moved to Fort Bend, County, Texas, but Richard stayed in Mississippi and worked for his mother's brother Christopher Columbus "C.C." Acker. C.C. gave his bible to Richard as a gift.
When he was in his 30's Richard married Alena "Lena" Stansel of Columbus, Mississippi and they had a son Richard Acker in 1913. Unfortunately, Richard died at the early age of 34 on the 27th of February, 1915, leaving his two year old son and a widow. He is buried in Friendship Cemetery, Columbus, Mississippi. His wife Lena lived until 1948 and is buried with him.
