Erna was the daughter of Adolf T Fuerniss, Jr. and Rolina (Lena)Bertram Fuerniss and sister to Walter, Clara Bereuter, Ted, and Erwin. Erna worked in Beatrice, Nebraska as a telephone switchboard operator until she married her husband. She married Fred D Phipps from Des Moines, Iowa and they had two daughters Maxine and Marilyn. Erna died in childbirth.
