Martha was born in Ireland, the daughter of Samuel Knox. She married Andrew Baird on February 11, 1865 in Coleraine, Londonderry, Ireland. The couple had three children before coming to America. The family departed from Glasgow, Scotland, and arrived in New York, July 21, 1870, aboard the Dacian.
The family spent some time in Pennsylvania before settling in Winfield, Lake County, Indiana by 1874. Her husband was a farmer.
Ten children came from the union: Anna, Joseph, Margaret, John, Mary Ann, William, Lizzie, Phoebe, Mattie, and Samuel.
