Ray Butala was a quiet, good-hearted man who loved to be surrounded by his children and grandchildren at get-togethers, which almost always happened at his house. I didn't know him well until I was in my teens, but he was my paternal grandfather and a good and loving man. He was taken from us following a painful battle with cancer, but I like to think he's still checking in on us all from time to time. He served proudly in World War II in the Merchant Marine - he was ineligible for other levels of military service due to hearing loss in childhood. Ray lived his entire life in Michigan, most of it in the Roseville area, where for many years he operated a silk-screening business; however, many of his immediate relatives remained in the Calumet area in the UP, where he'd grown up, and he visited them as often as he could. He was devoted to his wife Ann and close to all his kids and grandkids, and his loss has left a void in all our lives.
