R.G. was the second son of Heinrich (Henry) Friedrich Carl Meier and Ada Bertha Pilgrim. He was born 3 May 1904 in Sayre, Beckham Co., OK. When he was in the 4th grade, his father died, leaving his mother with 4 young children. He dropped out of school to help earn a living in what was then Indian Territory. He came to CA seeking work at about age 17. He found employment at the huge Tagus Ranch near Tulare driving a mule team and using a Fresno scraper to level land for the Merritt family. He soon returned to OK to bring the rest of his family to CA. R.G. settled in Porterville and eventually bought property on West Olive Street where he farmed for the rest of his life. He married Mabel Claire Rogers on 16 Aug 1935. This couple had two children, a daughter and a son, who attended local schools. R.G. was known as a very hard worker, keeping long hours, working from sun up to sun down. He leveled and improved his property until every inch was under cultivation. He grew cotton, potatoes, maize, alfalfa, corn and other crops through the years. After suffering from ill health for a time, he passed away at the Sierra Hospital in Porterville, CA on 17 Apr 1988, leaving his wife, Mabel, a daughter and a son, six grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
