Painter. He was considered to be the first Jewish painter in modern times to gain acceptance with the non-Jewish German population. While many other Jews chose to convert in order to be accepted in the mainly Christian world of artists, Oppenheim never denied his Orthodox Jewish heritage. He believed it was best to be both "fair to the present without denying the past". After his first painting lessons, at the age of 17, he entered the Munich Academey of Arts. Later, he traveled to Paris and became a student of Jean Baptiste Regnault. In Rome, his studies introduced him to many other contemporary artists, such as Friedrich Overbeck, who gave him a chance to learn their techniques. This was a first for a Jewish artist. At the same time, he continued to study life in a Jewish ghetto, making drawings of the cultural, domestic, and religious aspects of that culture. He always painted the Jewish family in the most positive way. He made his home in Frankfurt in his later years where he exhibited many of his paintings. In 1832, he received the honorary title of professor. He was commissioned to paint the Rothschild family's portraits along with Kaiser Otto IV and Joseph II in 1839. His ongoing studies of Jewish life underlined his reputation as an open-minded Jewish artist. By 1865, books had been published in London and the United States containing his works. The Jewish Museum in New York City has 16 of his paintings on display.
