Educated in the Roanoke school system, he moved to Lynchburg, as a young adult, and in 1943, was accepted at Tuskegee Institute, where he enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Force. He graduated in the class of 1945, as one of America's Elite Tuskegee Airmen (99th Fighter Squadron). Following his discharge in 1947, he became a civilian pilot instructor at the Lynchburg Preston Glenn Airport.
He also attended Dunbar High School, taking advanced classes in science and math (1948-1949). After 36 years of service, he retired as foreman of mails from the Lynchburg Post Office.
