Barbara was born 22 Sep 1891 in Elsass, Kutschurgan District, Ukraine. She was the daughter of Michael Meier and Magdalena Dietz. She married first Martin Binfet in the Ukraine and they had 3 children Anna born 1912, Blanch born 1914 both born in the Ukraine and Michael b. 1915 in North Dakota. Soon after imigrating to the USA Martin died in a farming accident on 10 Aug 1916. Michael Leier had just lost his first wife too in May 1916 and he had 4 young children from that marriage so arrangements were made and Michael and Barbara were married in Sept 1916. They had 5 more children together.
