This memorial is located on the campus of the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD and was created in 1981. In 1990 the United States Congress designated this to be a national memorial to all fallen firefighters.
The monument in the center of the memorial has a Maltese cross on the top of it, as this is the firefighter's symbol. Also there is a eternal flame and the Walk of Honor. The Walk Of Honor starts at the monument and is made of bricks and goes throughout the campus. On them are names of fallen firefighters that have had their names submitted and sponsored.
Whenever a firefighter dies in the line of duty, fire officials can post a death notice here and the flags will be lowered and flown at half-staff.
Each year a national memorial service is held at this site and a plaque is dedicated in honor of the heroic men and women who died in the line of duty the previous year.
There are events held at this site, family programs and they offer support to individuals who have lost a loved one.
The National Firefighters Memorial is open to the public.
I wish to thank Harley Dad for sponsoring this memorial.
