Ralph J. Aholt, 93, Washington, passed away Monday, April 26, 2010, at New Haven Care Center, New Haven.
Mr. Aholt was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Washington, the son of Joseph J. Aholt and wife Christina, nee Noelker.
He was united in marriage to Bernita E. Poepsel May 17, 1947, at St. Vincent's Church, Dutzow. They raised seven children in Washington.
Mr. Aholt attended St. Francis Borgia grammar school. As a young man, he was employed by Bleckman Machine Company and the International Shoe Factory, Washington.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was inducted Dec. 5, 1941. He was awarded five Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Aholt participated in the Sicilian, Normandy, Northern France, Germany and French Morocco campaigns. He was honorably discharged June 17, 1945, with the rank of technician 5th grade.
After the war, he worked at Modern Auto Company as a mechanic for over 40 years. He developed many lifelong friendships with his fellow co-workers at Modern Auto.
Mr. Aholt was a member of St. Francis Borgia Parish, V.F.W. Post 2661, Western Catholic Union and the Holy Name Society.
He helped coach Khoury League baseball teams. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting and pitching horseshoes. He also enjoyed woodworking and playing cards. He was a master repairman and barbecue chef.
Most of his free time was spent with his family. He had many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was a devoted husband and father, very caring and patient.
His honesty was admirable. He was always willing to help a neighbor or friend. He was respected and admired. His family benefited the most from his strong values and faith. We will all miss the love and attention that he was willing to share.
He was a resident of New Haven Care Center for the last three years.
Mr. Aholt is survived by his wife; four sons, Lawrence Aholt and wife Bonnie Lou, David Aholt and wife Mary Lee, John Aholt and Dale Aholt and wife Barb, all of Washington; one daughter, Mary Kaye Ronsick and husband John, St. Louis; one brother, Raymond Aholt and wife Mary Beth, Redmond, Wash.; two sisters, Gertrude Filla and husband Richard, Washington, and Mary Lou Schmidt and husband Dr. William, Evansville, Ind.; 10 grandchildren, Kristin Aholt and wife Lisa, Tavis Aholt and wife Jaime and Melissa Unnerstall and husband Sam, all of Washington, Laura Partridge and husband Bradley, St. Louis, Douglas Aholt and wife Maggie, Farmington, John M. Ronsick and wife Molly, Okawville, Ill., Lauren Weggemann and husband Jason, Robertsville, and Stephanie, Nicholas and Rachel Aholt, all of Clover Bottom; five great-grandchildren, Olivia Sullentrup, Reese Aholt, Braydon Weggemann, Stephen Partridge and Ethan Aholt; other relatives and many friends.
Mr. Aholt was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Mary Margaret Aholt; one son, James Aholt; one sister, Verna Siess; and one brother in infancy, Lenhardt.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 30, at St. Francis Borgia Church, Washington, with Father John Mayo officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Memorials to Franklin County Honor Flight or New Haven Care Center Activity Center are preferred.
