George was one of 10 children born to Francis and Anna Keller Barneycastle in Forsyth Co, NC. Anna was from a prominant Moravian family. George moved to MO looking for work, just before the Civil War. He enlisted in 1861 and joined the 3rd Illinois Cavalry which became the 3rd Missouri Cavalry. After the war he married Catherine Katie Jennings. They had no children. All of his brothers fought for the Confederacy, so he figured they wouldn't want to see him after the war since he fought for the Union. They didn't know what happened to him. Two brothers moved from NC to NE. One day a man came through town and said, hey, Barneycastle is such a weird name, I served in the Cavalry with a Barneycastle who lives in Macon, MO. They wrote to him and sure enough, it was brother George. So they were happily reunited and kept in touch until they died. Another weird coincidence, another George Barneycastle from the Davie Co, NC family, also served in the 3rd IL Cavalry, so I'm sure they chatted about their families. George's tombstone says he died Dec. 21, but the doctor's notes say the 22nd, and the death certificate says the 23rd.
