- J. E. Bryson Died Suddenly Monday Afternoon - October 4, 1947
J. E. Bryson, 78, a well known and highly regarded resident of this community practically all his life, died of a heart attack last Monday afternoon between 3:00 and 3:30 at his home at 920 Grant Street in Neodesha. He had apparently been about his usual health and had gone from his house to the garage at the rear of the lot to take some things. As he was gone longer than his wife expected she went to the garage and found him dead.
Jonah Elmer Bryson was born at Paola, Kansas, August 13, 1869, and was 78 years, 3 months and 18 days of age. He came to Neodesha as an infant with his parents, who settled on a farm east of town. He was married to Miss Mary Roletta Abbott of Fredonia December 25, 1893 and they located at Minden Mines, Mo., where Mr. Bryson worked in the mines for six or seven years, then moved to Neodesha and this city has since been their home.
After working at the Granby Smelter here for some time and later at the Standard Refinery, he entered the employ of the Prairie Oil and Gas Co. as a pumper and served most faithfully and efficiently in that capacity for over thirty years, retiring in 1931.
Mr. Bryson was a member of the Baptist church and of the I. O. O. F. Lodge No. 72. He was a good, square, kindly man, devoted to his family and his many friends were greatly shocked to learn of his sudden passing.
Besides his wife he is survived by the following children: Elmer J. Bryson of Kansas City, MO., Mrs. Myrtle Barron of Des Moines, Iowa, Lewis M, Bryson of Neodesha, Mrs. Virgil Shepherd of Sedgwick, Kansas, and Mrs. Wm. Hicks of Neodesha. One son, Chas. F. Bryson, and an infant daughter preceded him in death. He also leaves two grandchildren, Gerald and Jack Brown, who were reared by Mr. and Mrs. Bryson. Three sisters preceded him in death. He is survived by one brother, Frank Bryson of Dennis, Kansas, and 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Four brothers also preceded him in death.
Funeral services for Mr. Bryson will be held this afternoon at 2:00 O'clock from the William Fawcett Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. A. VanBenschoten, pastor of the Baptist church, and interment will be made in the Neodesha Cemetery.
