MR BROWN, WHOSE SAGE, QUIET VOICE GUIDED THE KANSAS STATE NETWORK AS CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD FOR 13 YEARS, DIED THURSDAY AT THE AGE OF 69. HE WAS A PROMINENT MEMBER OF A PROMINENT WICHITA FAMILY. HE AND HIS BROTHER, PIONEERS IN WICHITA TELEVISION, FOUNDED KARD-TV IN THE 1950S. THE STATION EVENTUALLY GREW INTO THE KANSAS STATE NETWORK OF BROADCAST PROPERTIES. HE TOOK OVER THE HELM OF KSN IN 1967, AFTER THE SUDDEN DEATH OF HIS BROTHER, GEORGE. MR. BROWN HEADED THE COMPANY - WITH ITS WICHITA FLAGSHIP, CHANNEL 3; THREE TELEVISION STATION IN WESTERN KANSAS; ONE IN JOPLIN, MO AND CABLE-TV OPERATIONS IN SEVERAL STATE - UNTIL IT SOLD 3 1/2 YEARS AGO. HE CONTINUED WORKING WITH THE MANAGEMENT OF MULTIMEDIA INC., WHICH BOUGHT KSN'S CABLE OPERATION, UNTIL HIS DEATH."FIRST OF ALL, CHARLIE WAS AN OUTSTANDING EXECUTIVE," SAID DON SBARRA, MULTIMEDIA PRESIDENT AND MR BROWN'S FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE SINCE THE LATE 1950S. "HE WAS QUIET AND EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT. IN HIS OWN, QUIET WAY HE GOT QUITE A FEW IMPORTANT PROJECTS ACCOMPLISHED, ONE OF WHICH WAS THE EXPANSION OF OUR CABLE DIVISION FROM 17,000 SUBSCRIBERS (3 1/2 YEARS AGO) TO 270,000 TODAY."

A NATIVE WICHITAN, MR BROWN GRADUATED FORM NORTH HIGH SCHOOL AND FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS WITH A DEGREE IN BUSINESS. HE MET MARY RUTH BORDNER WHILE WORKING AT INNES DEPARTMENT STORE, THE COUPLE WAS MARRIED IN 1938. DURING WORLD WAR II, MR BROWN SERVED IN THE PACIFIC AS A CAPTAIN IN THE U.S. ARMY AIR FORCE. MR BROWN IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE; SON, CHARLES JR. OF DURANGO, COLO.; DAUGHTER, SHARON COX OF CRESTED BUTTE, COLO. AND SEVEN GRANDCHILDREN
