MARRIED TO JOSEPHINE (DICK) BENDEL (JULY 5, 1923-SEPT. 21, 1999) JOESPHINE DIED AT THE AGE OF 76.
Ralph Gustav Bendel Sr. was considered by so many of his friends and acquaintances to be a “natural gentleman”, a kind and generous man of “old world sensibilities.” He was born on August 25, 1921 to Gustav and Johannah Bendel of Winnetka, Illinois where he was raised. He graduated from New Trier High School and attended college at Iowa State before coming to the University of Tulsa where in math class he met his future bride Josephine E. Dick. World War II interrupted his college years and he served four years in the Army Air Corps in Italy and Algiers. After the war he returned to Tulsa and wed Josephine. The marriage bore three sons: Ralph Gustav Jr., Edwin Dick, and Christopher Barry. Ralph had been trained by his father, an immigrant from Austria, in gardening, carpentry, metal works, plumbing and electrical. He could do anything with his hands. After a time working in finance he returned to what he loved and established “La Maison Inc.”, a manufacturer of custom chandeliers, lighting fixtures, and brass hardware. He retired in 1987 and he and Josephine spent their time between their Tulsa home and a summer family home in Taos N.M. They enjoyed watching the family grow with grandchildren, Medea, Johannah, Celeste, Matt, David, and Elizabeth. They also enjoyed traveling whether it be to Europe, an Alaskan Cruise or in their travel trailer to the mountains of the west as they did every year with the children as they grew up. Josephine died in 1999 leaving a permanent hole in Ralph’s heart; but he kept the vigor and belief in life and cherished the arrival of great-grandchildren Alec Michael Howard and Brayden Gustav Howard and maintained an active part of his family. On May 28, 2011 Ralph picked a bouquet of lilac blooms from his Taos garden for his Josephine and then went back to the garden to water his trees where he so suddenly left us, and joined his beloved Josephine. There will be a memorial service at 6:30 pm on Thursday, July 7th at Cascia Hall’s St. Rita Chapel. Memorial donations can be given to “The Rev. Henry V. Spielmann Scholarship Fund” at Cascia Hall or the St. John Lafortune Cancer Center. This obituary was published in the Tulsa World on 7/3/2011.
