"Joseph Macomber and his son Charles came to Winslow from Jo Daviess County in 1836. Joseph even when an old man, perhaps remembering stern days on the new frontiers, went well armed at all times. Under his leather jacket he carried a large pistol secured by a line around his neck, he never left the house without his rifle; these arms he continued to carry to the time of his death."
