MR. A. J. ALMAND, LITHONIA BANKER, CHURCHMAN, DIES

Father of Three Leading Atlantians Succumbs After Short Illness

Mr. Alexander James Almand, president of the Lithonia People's Bank, for fifty years a leading citizen of DeKalb County, and father of H. Grady Almand, Dr. Claude A. Almand and Bond Almand, prominent Atlantians, died Sunday after a short illness at Dr. Almand's home at 717 Brookridge Drive, N. E. He was 81 years old and was ill only a short time.

The board of stewards and officials of the Sunday school of the church, and the directors of the bank acted as an honorary escort at funeral services Monday afternoon at the Lithonia Methodist Church. Rev. Thomas M. Elliott, the pastor, officiated, and burial was in Lithonia Cemetery.

Pallbearers were six young men who had been associated wtih him in the administration of the Sunday school, Hugh Marbut, G. B. Abram, J. K. Davidson, Jr., L. M. Starr, A. H. Flake and Dr. Thomas Stewart.

Mr. Almand entered the mercantile business in 1873, and until his retirement in 1920 operated one of the largest general stores in that section. With large farming interests, he maintained active direction of them until two months ago, and also remained as president of the People's Bank.

Taking a deep interest in political affairs, Mr. Almand never offered for office, but took part in many campaigns to aid candidates whom he considered worthy of election. He was active in the work of the church and Sunday school, and two years ago a window was dedicated to him in commemoration of his long service as superintendent.

Mr. Almand's first wife was Miss Clara Bond, who died in 1913. He is survived by his second wife, formerly Mrs. L. E. Edmondson, of Little Rock, Ark.; a daughter, Mrs. Sadie Tucker, of Lithonia; five sons, John P. Almand, of Little Rock; H. Grady Almand, Dr. Claude A. Almand and Bond Almand, of Atlanta; Professor Joseph M. Almand, of Macon; and three brothers and three sisters.
