Alan Alexander Cranston, 66, of Laurinburg, NC, passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Scotland Memorial Hospital. A native of Bricktown, N.J., he was the son, and only child of the late Carl and Mae Hearle Cranston, and the foster son of the (late)Reverend Don and Virginia Whiteman, of Parkersburg, WV.
Alan spent his life in public education as a school psychologist serving children in North and South Carolina. Currently employed by the Florence County Schools, District 2 as the Training/Support Specialists, he received his education at Brick Township High School, Eastern University, St. Louis University, Temple University, and NC State University. He served his country in the U.S. Navy medical corp., from 1970-1974; and he also delighted in serving family and friends. A man of many talents and abilities, he also enjoyed NASCAR and skeet shooting.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 26th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Burroughs-Cooper-Kiser Funeral Home, 688 Beauty Spot Road East, Bennettsville, South Carolina. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 27th at 1:00 pm at the funeral home.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Vivian Butler Cranston, by three sons Brett Cranston of Los Angeles, CA; Jeff Cranston of Winchester, CA; Robbie Currie of Wilmington, NC; daughter, Kim Currie Mitchell, of Wilmington, NC.; daughter in law, Cindy, and twin grandchildren, Will and Hanna, age three, of Wilmington, NC, who were the joy of his life. Also surviving are his step brothers Rex (Kaye), Dave (Harriet), and Richard ( Carol) Whiteman, and the Butler family of Laurinburg.
