Second daughter of Fanny Fern and Charles Eldredge. Fern fictionalized her difficulty raising her children after being widowed in Ruth Hall. The novel recounts how Grace was left with her unloving grandparents because Fern could not financially support her. Once her writing career developed, she retrieved Grace and broke contact with her in-laws.
Her mother later remarried, but the relationship was disastrous. After a divorce, Fern married James Parton. Grace died of scarlet fever in 1862, shortly after giving birth to her daughter, Grace Ethel Thompson, who was adopted by her grandmother and went by the name Ethel Parton.
