August Martin Benner was born in Dillenberg, Nassau, Germany. When he was almost two years old, his parents came to America, and settled in New Braunfels, where he spent his boyhood. Later he moved to Fredericksburg, Texas, where he served as Justice of Peace for twenty five years. August Martin married Caroline Greenwood of Luling in 1885. Together they had three children: Herbert Benner, Clara Eugenia (Benner) Matthews, and Lillian R."Lillie" (Benner) McLain.
