Wayne Battle was the son of Hollaman Battle and his wife Elizabeth Ann Hyde Battle. Wayne was the first white child born in the newly created city of Waynesville North Carolina. (Formerly New Prospect) His family was very instramental in the establishment of Haywood county as well as the city of Waynesville.

Wayne Battle built the Battle House Hotel on Main Street in downtown Waynesville. It was a prominent landmark until it was demolished in 1899.
