Son of Earl and Ada Marie Batesole. On August 18, 1927 he married Helen M Finlely in Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa. Their first store, the Star Grocery, was located in East State Street in Marshalltown, and they later went on to Sount Center and West Main Street.

Lyle played football for Marshalltown High School in 1922. He played right guard. "This man was our largest asset in football weighing 210 pounds.
