Known as I.E.P, He was the youngest child of Evandrew Berton & Melinda Ann Dodd Smith. He married Saphrona Ann West in 1883 in Benton County, Missouri. On December 29, 1899, after trading his 80 acres of land in Missouri for a relinquishment NW of Greenfield, Blaine County, OK, he left with 2 daughters, a nephew, and 2 teams of horses and 2 covered wagons for this piece of land. They were 21 days on the road. His wife came on the train to Geary and met them there. He built their house with the money made from their first cotton crop.
They had 8 children, all born in Missouri: Myrtle, Mary, Sarah Elizabeth, Charles Isaac, William H., Lennie Virginia, Evandrew Freeman, and Leonard Franklin.
