Richard ASH [variant spelling: ASH, ASHE] was son of John ASH [the Agent], 1649-1704, and of his wife, Mary BATT, 1667-1712, daughter of Reverend Samuel BATT, 1639-1684, and of his wife, Mary --, died circa 1690.

Richard ASH was a Captain in the militia.

He served two brief terms in the Commons House in South Carolina. He won a special election in the St. John Colleton Parish and qualified on January 23, 1747 for the Fifteenth Royal Assembly, (1746-1747). He was re-elected to the Sixteenth Royal Assembly (1747) representing St. John Colleton County, and the parish also elected him to the Seventeenth Royal Assembly (1748) but he declined to serve.

Ash's plantation, primarily a rice plantation, (also called ASH Plantation, Pon Pon Plantation, owned by Joseph ASHE in 1711 (68 slaves), willed to Richard Cochran ASH 1790 numbering 500 acres land) located on Hope Creek, a branch of the Edisto River in St. Bartholomew's Parish, (Colleton County) was worked by 37 slaves.

Richard ASH married first, Mary COCHRAN, daughter of James COCHRAN and of his wife, Mary RUSSELL. To this marriage, these children are known:

son, Joseph ASH, 1725-1765 ; 'eldest son of Mary [COCHRAN] ASH; Will of Joseph ASH dated 24 Sep 1765. Proved 23 May 1766. THE EXCOMMUNICATION OF JOSEPH ASH. The case of Joseph ASH is recorded in the volume of Records of the Court of Ordinary 1764-1771.

son, Cato ASH, born 1728; md. Sarah - ; died intestate, 1757;

son, John ASHE, 1731-1785; md. December 22, 1763, St. Andrew's Parish, Berkeley County, South Carolina, Grace CODNER. "John Ash & Grace Codner, Spinster, married December 22, 1763, by Rev. Martyn." Children include: Charles Codner ASHE, - md. Miss -- GOFF, and had William and Mary ASHE; John ASHE, md. married Margaret DeVEAUX; Richard ASHE, md. his deceased brother's wife, Margaret De VEAUX ASHE.

Theodora, Portia and Priscilla survived their faither.

Richard ASH died between August 10, 1765 when he signed his will and July 4, 1766 when it was proved.
