Birth: Oct. 22, 1824
Suffolk County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Feb. 14, 1870
Suffolk County
Massachusetts, USA

In his youth, Thomas E. Chickering worked for his father's well-known business, the Chickering Piano Manufacturing Company in Boston, and after his father died in 1853, he became its head. In 1857, he became a member of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. When the Civil War began in 1861, business prevented him from entering national service, but in the fall of 1862 he accepted a commission as Colonel of the Forty-first Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. The regiment was ordered to Louisiana, and in the spring of 1863 became mounted. On June 17, 1863, the regiment was redesignated the Third Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry. On July 9, 1863, after the Confederate surrender at Port Hudson, Colonel Chickering became the provost marshal and Lieutenant-Colonel Lorenzo D. Sargent took command of the regiment. Due to ill health, Colonel Chickering resigned and was discharged on September 1, 1864, and returned to Boston. For his service, he was breveted Brigadier General, U. S. Volunteers, to date March 13, 1865. He died of apoplexy at age forty-five.
