Aaran Elizabeth Curry Bowles, daughter
of Lewis Robert Curry & Mary T. Fleming,
Red Springs, Texas. Aaran married
Virgil Anderson Bowles 3 Jan 1909 in
Smith County Texas. They had 4 children -
twins, Eugene & Pauline b.27 Nov 1909.
Maurine b.1 May 1915,Florene b.22 Aug 1927.
Aaran was only 53 when she lost her battle
with Cervical Cancer. You gave so much!
---------------------------------------
Aaran was an excellent cook and she
never new who would show up at her table.
Everyone was welcome and there was
plenty to eat because they raised their
food. Left-overs went to the dogs or pigs
and it wasn't considered a waste.
Vegetables from the garden were
'canned' in the summer to take us
through the winter. Canning day was
a family event and all the women of
the family came to help. The kids 'got
to' wash the jars because our hands
were small. We also 'got to' shell
peas and beans. Everybody worked in
those days. We were 'poor' money-wise,
but rich in the way family worked and
played together. Sunday was actually a
day of rest and dedicated to Church
and family. After a large meal with
fried chicken and numerous vegetables
and deserts to chose from, came quiet
time when adults spent quality time
together and the cousins played together.
In the afternoon, we might 'bust' a few
of the watermelons that were stacked
under three large shade trees beside
the road. We just reached in with our
hands and plucked out the heart of
the watermelon and ate it with the
juice running down our arms and chin.
Or maybe Virgil would break out the
icecream frezer and Aaran would whip
up a wonderful concoction that
turned into the most delicious
icecream you ever tasted. I usually
'got to' sit on the freezer to keep
it steady while the men cranked the
handle to make the icecream - a most
'cooling' experience on those hot
summer days. My memories of those
days with my grandparents are
beautiful.............with progress,
we have lost so much! SAW
