According to his obituary, he was a native of Schooley's Mountain, NJ. He was a prominent wholesale produce merchant in Easton who was active in civic affairs. He resided at 440 Ferry Street. He died suddenly while attending the annual Methodist camp meeting in Ocean Grove, NJ.

He was married to Catherine (or Elizabeth) Everett (or Everitt), then to Mary Keller. He had four sons, all from his marriage to Catherine: William E., John W., Frank E. and Joseph K. (Frank was the father of Judge Crater, who disappeared in 1930.)
