The following biography was written by Wayne Parker:
Philip Walker Hemphill was born September 25, 1804 in Chester Co. S.C. His parents were Jonathan and Esther Walker Hemphill. They moved to Jackson County, Georgia. Jonathan's name is on the "Certified List of Revolutionary War Soldiers." Philip married first Elizabeth Cunningham, daughter of Joseph and Agnes Montgomery Cunningham, on September 22,1825. After Elizabeth death Philip married second Helen Narcissa Cunningham on may 20,1845,daughter of James and Mary McNeese. Narcissa was Elizabeth's first cousin. Philip W. Hemphill was one of five men who founded Rome, Georgia. Philip rode from Georgia to Texas and back by horseback. After he sold his holding in Georgia, he was on his way to Texas when he stopped off to visit his brother Charles in French Camp, Mississippi. He decided to stay and make his home in MS. He was elected from Choctaw, Co. to serve in the MS. Legislature. He later moved to Carrollton, MS where he died on April 2, 1862. Philip and Elizabeth daughter, Cyntia Adeline Hemphill married Horbart D. Shaw.
Philip and Narcissa daughter, Sarah A. (Sallie) Hemphill married James H. Parker. Philip and Narcissa Son, Doctor Charles Philip Hemphill married Willie Roxie Tindall.
