EARLY SETTLER DIES

William Jesse Baxter, a pioneer settler of Buchanan county, a resident of Rushville for more than fifty years, departed this life Dec. 2nd., at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clara Barragar of Clarinda, Iowa.
The remains were brought to Rushville, Sunday, Dec 3rd, and after a short funeral service, at the home of his grandson, Wilmot Smith, he was laid to rest by the side of his beloved companion, Victoria Nave Baxter, who preceded him by twelve years. This venerable old couple were permittad (sic) 52 years of married life.
Grandpa Baxter was born in Clinton county, Missouri, Nov. 13, 1835, married Victoria Nave Oct. 19, 1857 (sic-should be 1859), to this union was born one child, a daughter, Clara. Besides his daughter, there are living 9 grandchildren.
Farewell, dear one, for a few short years. Then will come our happy meeting.
There is no death what seems so, is transition.
This life of mortal breath.
Is but a suburb of the life elysian,
Whose portal we call Death.
