John Barnhart was born in Ontario, Canada in 1828 and came to the US as a young man. He married Henrietta Thompson in Indiana and then moved to Illinois where Henrietta died at the age of 25. John with the help of his mother-in-law raised his four children, Emanuel Thomas, Rachel Lavina, Mary Rose and Alice Almira.He died at the home of his son, Emanuel in Nebraska.
