He was 20 and the son of Edward John and Bessie Abbott,[nee Whitehouse] of Streatham, London.

HMS Jervis Bay encountered the German Pocket-Battleship Admiral Scheer whilst protecting a convoy of ships sailing between Canada & England.Of the 255 men who sailed on the ship that day, only 65 were to survive.
The Captain of HMS Jervis Bay (Fogarty Fegen) subsequently received a posthumous V.C. for the brave actions of the ship & crew that day.
