Barkley Ewing Ballard was born on October 17, 1839, probably in Red River, Texas. His parents were Barkley Moorman Ballard and his first wife Mary Gillentine Ballard.
In 1860, 21-year-old Barkley was still living in the household of his father and step-mother. He worked as a mechanic in Pleasanton, Atascosa County, Texas. It is not until he is 26 that Barkley started a family of his own. On December 11, 1865, he married Melissa Jane Guinn in Gonzales County, Texas. By the time of the 1870 Census, Barkley has started farming; and he nad Melissa have two sons--Newton T. and George Lee. By 1880 Barkley has become a wheelwright. He and Mellssa have added an additional three chilren to their family--Kate A., John A., and Elizabeth J. But they have lost a child too. Barkley's namesake, Barkley Ewing Ballard, Jr., who was born in 1872 died in 1879 in Gonzales County and was buried in Leesville Cemetery.
Barkley died on October 6, 1887, in Gonzales County, Texas, and was buried near his son Barkley Jr. in Leesville Cemetery, Leesville, Gonzales County, Texas.
His wife Melissa's life is uncertain after Barkley's death in 1887. In 1900 she is still living in Gonzales County, Texas. In her household is her son John A. Ballard and his wife Willie; and, in addition, she had living with her two children--Maud, age 9, and Ross, age 7, who would have been born after Barkley's death. She refers to them on the census as son and daughter, but perhaps they are grandson and granddaughter.
