Hugh Jonathan Berry was born on July 23, 1894, in Jackson County, Tennessee. His parents were Thomas Nelson Berry and Ruth Antha I. Christian Berry. His siblings were named Galey, Nellie, Effie, Cleo, and George. He attended Pleasant Hill Academy in Crossville, Tennessee.

When he was approximately 23, Hugh served in the U. S. Army during World War I. He returned from the war and operated a general merchandise store with this brother George and was a salesman of dry goods.

On December 23, 1924, 30-year-old Hugh married the love of his life: Leola McCawley. The couple had a much-loved son and daughter.

Hugh died on February 26, 1968, in Jackson County, Tennessee, at the age of 73. He was buried in the John L. Clark Memorial Cemetery in Jackson County. His beloved Leola was buried beside him 22 years later.
