John Morden Caster married Jane Udell on December 13, 1833 in Canada and moved with his parents and brothers and sisters to Michigan about 1845.
John and Jane had eight children: Anna Matilda Caster Hall, George R. Caster, Eliza J. Caster Dayton, Robert Morden Caster, Nancy Elizabeth Caster Gibb, Rachael Rozanna Caster Graham, John A. Caster, and William B. Caster.
John's obituary appeared in the Kalamazoo Saturday Telegraph July 1, 1899:
Death called one of Kalamazoo's oldest and most respected citizens Friday afternoon when John M. Caster passed away after long and intense suffering. He had been ill for about a year with Bright's disease but was confined to his bed only one week.
John M. Caster was born April 16, 1815 in Markham, near Toronto, Canada. Much of his life was spent in his native country until he moved to Kalamazoo thirty-three years ago. He has since made this city his home. He was a carpenter by trade, though for some years he has not been strong enough to work. He was a member of the first paid fire force of Kalamazoo and at another time was a policeman. In all of his vocations and among the many who counted themselves friends and acquaintances he was known as an upright man whose integrity was his most valued possession. He was a member of the First M. E. church. He leaves to mourn him four sons and three daughters. They are: George Caster of Oshtemo; Mrs. William Dayton of St. Claire; Robert Caster of Texas; Mrs. Henry Gibb of Kalamazoo; Mrs. John Graham of St. Claire; John Caster and William B. Caster of Kalamazoo; and a brother Alexander Caster of Richmond, Macomb county. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Gibb, 138 East North Street. The Rev. James Kirkland will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside by the side of his wife who died a year and ten months ago.
