Johan L. "Joe" Aberson, 100, of Alton, died Sunday, February 5, at Valley Manor in Rock Valley.
Services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 9, at the Reformed Church of Alton with the Rev. Raymond Tilstra and the Rev. Clarence Greving officiating. Burial was in Nassau Township Cemetery of rural Alton.
Aberson was born April 20, 1888, in the Netherlands and came to the United States at age 22. Her served in the U.S. Army during World War I.
On December 13, 1919, he married Johanna Leenhouts. The couple farmed at Alton. She died November 23, 1925. On March 3, 1947, he married Hendrika Van Engen. They made their home in Alton where he served as mayor. In 1977, they became residents of Valley Manor. She died November 3, 1978.
Aberson was a member of the Reformed Church where he served as an elder and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of Floyd Post 200, American Legion.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Dena and Dave Palsma and Bertha and Norman Eason, all of Alton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Ethel Aberson of Orange City, and Peter and Geri Aberson of Alton; a step-daughter, Gertrude Visser; a brother, Anton Aberson of Alton; grandchildren; four step grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established in his name with the Gideons.
