My darling and vivacious mother, Hazel Elizabeth Bell, was the eldest daughter of Robert Egerton ("Edgie") Bell and Ella May Spies, who are also buried in Belsyde Cemetery. She was sister to 7 siblings: G. Fredrick ("Fred") Bell (1920-1989), John Nelson ("Jack") Bell (1922-1970), Gordon ("Dunc") Bell (1924-2005), Margaret M. Bell (1927-1947), Norman W. Bell (1929-1977), Jean Alexander nee Bell (1932-), and D. Kenneth Egerton ("Kenny") Bell (1935-1989).
Hazel was married on August 11, 1956 to Samuel William McCoy (1923-2009), b. London, Ontario. Following a miscarriage in 1957 or 1958, she had one child, Julie Christine Milton nee McCoy (1960-), b. St. Catharines, Ontario.
From her obituary:
McCOY - Hazel Elizabeth (née Bell), 79, in Victoria, B.C. on 4 May 2003 after a brave struggle with cancer. Born in Peel Township on 21 September 1923, she was the daughter of Egerton Bell and Ella Spies. Hazel will be lovingly remembered by husband Samuel (London), daughter Julie and son-in-law Keith (Victoria), sister Jean (Fergus), brother Gordon (Alma), and countless friends and relatives.
After leaving high school, Hazel attended Normal School in Toronto. Upon graduating, she taught elementary school, first in Metz, then in Niagara Falls, where she married Sam. They moved to St. Catharines, where Julie was born, then to Ottawa. In 1991 Hazel returned to her home area of Fergus, where she joyfully renewed her old friendships and became active in community life. Upon being diagnosed with cancer in January 2003, Hazel moved to Victoria to be with her daughter, where she peacefully passed away surrounded by close family in the loving atmosphere of Victoria Hospice.
Hazel will be remembered by everyone she met for her cheerful and outgoing nature, warm heart, and unfailing generosity. Her favourite activity was to make other people happy - especially by providing her unique blend of lively companionship, lovingly prepared food, and tender concern. She was especially devoted to her daughter Julie, whose various accomplishments were proudly recounted to many friends. A deeply loving soul, Hazel will be keenly missed, but very fondly remembered, by everyone who knew her.
Friends were received at the Thomson-Collins Funeral Home, 160 St. David Street North, Fergus. The funeral service was held from Melville United Church, Fergus on Thursday, May 15, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Austin Snyder officiating. Interment followed at Belsyde Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at Victoria Hospice (especially Dr. Debra Braithwaite and nurses Ute, Phuong and Stephanie) for their care and kindness. For those who desire, donations in memory of Hazel may be made to Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, or the charity of your choice.
