John David Bakes, 71, of Shelbyville, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at Major Hospital.
He was born Sept. 10, 1941, in Noble Township to John J. Bakes and Bertha (Spurling) Bakes. He married Linda Kay (Kuntz) Bakes on June 8, 1959, and she survives in Shelbyville.
Other survivors include three daughters, Jamie (husband, Edward) Kuhn of Shelbyville, Karen (husband, Michael) Lewis of St. Paul and Robin Ritter of Rush County; brother, James Bakes of Shelbyville; two sisters, Rozella Bakes of St. Paul and Louisa Kimmel of Olney, Ill.; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Bakes had been a Shelbyville resident for two years, formerly living in St. Paul. He graduated from St. Paul High School in 1959.
He worked as a military pay clerk at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis for 21 years, and he also had been employed at Delta Faucet of Greensburg.
Mr. Bakes was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church and had served with the St. Paul Volunteer Fire Department for 32 years.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, with the Rev. Dawn Barnes officiating at Union Chapel United Methodist Church, 4647 N. Decatur County Road 700W, south of St. Paul. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until services Saturday at the church. Burial will be at a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by Glenn E. George and Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road in Shelbyville.
