Wesson's grandfather was the first mayor of Olive Branch, Mississippi. In 1874, Olive Branch was incorporated and elected its first Ben Wesson. Wesson served only term as mayor until 1877. He would later serve as Postmaster from 1880 until 1888. In 1875, while Mayor, Wesson built his home on property at the junction of Pigeon Roost Road and Pleasant Hill Road now Goodman Road). Today it is known as the Wesson House and is a Dedicated Mississippi Landmark, one of only three In DeSoto County.
Wesson lived a very active and interesting life. He loved to travel, and he never met a stranger.
He was always giving a dollar or two, sometimes more, if he found someone on the down and out. I have seen him go into a store and bring out a sandwich and drink, giving it to someone that looked hungry. He never expected anything in return.
If he and my mother saw a stray dog, they would pick the dog up and carried it to the vet. Getting whatever medical treatment it needed. They would have the dog spayed or neutered, then take the dog home with them until they found it a good home. Once he and my mother had 17 dogs living with them. Plus, horses, donkeys, mules, geese, ducks, guineas, a stocked pond of fish and also a stocked lake. You could fish in his lake or pond. However, he would not let you take them home to eat. He did not like to see anything die.
Wesson loved all of his children and grandchildren. When the grandchildren would come over or he would go to their house, he would always slip them a dollar or two before leaving. He told me once, he never wanted them to be broke. :-) He worried about all his children too.
Wesson's son, "Sonny" died on October 17, 1997. He took it hard for a long time. But not as hard as losing his granddaughter, Wendy to murder. He never recovered from this. He grieved over her death everyday.. Always talking about the Angel. My mother and his nickname for her, was given to her moments after her birth, when my mother came into the room to see their new granddaughter. For 21 years, that is the name they called her, "Angel"
Wesson grieved twelve months for his son and seven months for the Angel. His grieving heart could not take the pain any longer. That morning he was complaining about his chest hurting. My mother was on the way to the hospital with him, when he slumped over in the car. She went into shock. She called me, and told me what was going on. I said, "Mother, which hospital are you going too, and I will meet you there. I was less than 5 minutes from there. I raced into the ER, screaming, "Where is my father?" No one knew. "I called my mother back and she was a few miles away. I told her to take him to the fire station, which she was closer too. I would meet her there. I called her back a couple of minutes later and ask how he was doing. She was screaming and crying. "There is no one at the fire station" Oh my God, "What have I done?" I sent her to a place where he could not get help. I told her to hang on. I instructed the nurses at the ER to send an ambulance to the fire station. I told my mother, "The ambulance is on the way and I will be there also."
I beat the ambulance there. I started CPR and nothing I did could bring him back. The EMTS took over and then the firemen got back to the station, and they too, started working on him.
I hurt to this day, not being able to save this wonderful man. There is some guilt, I will carry for the rest of my life telling my mother to take him to the fire station..
Wesson left behind a wife, sons, daughters, and numerous grandchildren that miss him today. His death had a big impact on all of us.. Wesson was buried next to my daughter, his precious Angel
