A native of Norfolk, VA, Prof. DeFord relocated to Washington, D.C. in about 1891. He was a music teacher and, for many years, partnered with his friend, Hugh Edgar Saltsman, in the operation of the Saltsman-DeFord School of Music and Acting in D.C.
On December 26, 1909, Prof. DeFord fractured his leg in a fall on ice on Pennsylvania Ave. He was taken to Emergency Hospital and died there about 3 weeks later. He was survived by his parents and a sister, Alice R. Cooper, wife of Charles C. Cooper.
William DeFord was buried in Congressional Cemetery. His parents are buried next to him and his sister nearby.
