Mrs. Emma Myrick Hoke wife of William Hoke of Pleasant Valley passed away at the Mary Imogene Hospital, Cooperstown at 3:30 Saturday morning, following an illness of several weeks from complication disease.
She was born April 25, 1855 at Dansville. She was a kind home-loving Christian woman and much sympathy will be extended her husband and adopted son, Clifford Arthur Hoke of Smithville Flats.
She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Mary McDonald of Boston, Mass. Mrs. Frank Thomas, Mrs. Jane Thomas of Deposit, and one brother Charles Myrick of Florida.
The funeral services were held at Exeter Center church Tuesday at 2 p.m.. Burial was made in Exeter Center Cemetery.
Emma was the daughter of Daniel Charles Myrick 1819 to 1894 and Ann Priscilla Eacott 1827 to 1917. As a young man Daniel sailed to Australia on a whaling ship and decided to stay. He married Ann on June 15,1843. They had twelve children with Emma being number six in order. Daniel later remarried in Kansas and had four more children before returning to Ann in Pennsylvania shortly before his death.
Emma came to America in 1868 with her mother and 10 siblings. Daniel and his oldest daughter Lois Ann and her two children came to America in 1867.
Emma's second marriage was in 1888 to Edward Adare in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania per the published history of Susquehanna County which included a photo of Edward and a short story about his life.
Some research say she was married to unknown Tarbox. No record found as such. However by the 1900 census both her and Edward had been married twice.
Edward was born in 1835 in Delaware Co. New York to Joseph Adair and Polly Peck. Edward had 9 siblings. Edward died on April 16, 1910 in Harmony, Susquehanna Co, Pa. Edward and Emma belonged to the Harmony Presbyterian Church, his death is recorded in the church records. He is buried in the Brandt Cemetery there along with Daniel and Ann Myrick.
Daniel's plot has 2 spaces, but Ann's burial is not marked. However in the old records of the Mumford Funeral Home Ann Myrick's records reports she is buried in Brandt cemetery and her grave is not marked. It listed her birth place as England and her father's name.
Edward Adare's father Joseph Adair was born in 1797 in Ireland. Joseph's father was James Adair who bought the family to America. After James died, Joseph's mother married John Stafford from Ireland as well.
Edward Adare/Adair first married Harriet Simmons the daughter of Nicholas Simmons. She died in 1883 in Delaware Co. NY. He then moved to Susquehanna Co. Pennsylvania. Edward and Harriet had two sons, George and Charles. Charles married Cloey Lee the daughter of Elizabeth Myrick and Lewis Lee. Elizabeth Myrick was Emma Myrick's sister.
After Edward Adare died Emma married William T. Hoke on 3-28-1912 in Susquehanna Co, Pennsylvania. Taken from their marriage record William was born in March 31,1864 at Warren, New York, the son of Mathias Hoke Jr.
Emma was laid to rest near William, his first wife Margaret and their infant daughter Nellie.
By the 1900 census William and Margaret (Maggie) were married about 1884/1885 and had 3 other children: John F. born October 1885, William Jr. born March 1893, Florence born April 1900.
By the 1930 census ( marked as daughter) Belva Barnes born about 1911 is listed, she is actually Emma's sister Matilda's granddaughter Belva Thomas-Barnes, the daughter of Ralph Thomas and Matilda Race.
