Mae was the daughter of George Bert Sheffer and Mariah Argyle( Warmer) Sheffer, born in Bountiful Utah in 1912 , Mae was the youngest of four children. She graduated High School in Grand Island Nebraska.
She met her future husband Virgil Clifford Bickel while he was a chauffeur for Lou Becker In Denver Colorado. They where married May 13, 1933 by a Justice of the Peace in Littleton Colorado. They had three children, Idora Marie, Del, and Kenneth.
In 1943, She and Virgil moved to Kearney Nebraska to farm, They also ran the Bickel Bus and taxi Line. moving back to Fort Collins Colorado in 1961. There they ran a Antique shop and later A Toot and Moo. One of the earliest Convenience stores, retiring in 1972 Moving to Poudre Park, on the Poudre River just west of Fort Collins Colorado. On July 31, 1976, The Big Thompson flood hit, completely destroying their uninsured home. With the help of the Mennonites it was rebuilt, They lived there three more years before returning to Fort Collins.
After the death of her husband Virg, in 1994, Mae lived with her son Ken in her home in Fort Collins
