Virgil was born in the old family homestead farmhouse in 1907, The son of Ulysses Grant Bickel and his wife Idora ( Sevier ) Bickel. He was the eighth of Nine children. He attended School in Jetmore Kansas, Completing two years of High School.. Also at this time working on the family farm. At the age of 16, Virgil left home and moved to Dodge City Kansas working various jobs from farming to truck driving. At the age of 23 he moved to Denver Colorado.
In Denver he got a job at the Denver stockyard. At this time he met his future wife Mae Sheffer. They where married May 13, 1933 in Littleton Colorado. There first child Idora Marie was born Jan. 19,1934, On Nov 12, 1942 their son Del was born. Nine months later Virg and Mae bought a Ranch in Kearney Neb.. later starting the Bickel Bus and taxi line. At this time a third child was born. Kenneth was born Sept 28, 1947 . Virg sold the taxi and bus line and opened a liquor store.
In 1961 Virgil and Mae and family Moved to Fort Collins Colorado. Opening a Antique Store, later starting a Toot and Moo. One of the first convenience stores. Virg sold the business and retired in 1972.
In his retirement he enjoyed gardening, growing a record size pumpkin, also liked the Broncos football and baseball on TV. Having fun with his grandchildren and Great grandchildren was a joy to him.
After their retirement Virgil and Mae moved to Poudre Park on the Poudre River just west of Fort Collins Colorado. On July 31,1976 The Big Thompson flood Struck , Completely destroying their uninsured home. With the help of a interest free government loan and the help of the Mennonites it was rebuilt. They lived there three more years before returning to Fort Collins.
