Born in Maldegem 1821, he moved to Holland at age 21 residing for some time at Waterlandkerkje. On march 2nd 1855 he left Zeeland and boarded a ship going to America. It took about 5 to 6 weeks to cross the ocean at the time. When arriving in America he continued his journey towards Milwaukee, WI. He married Rosalie Booth a native of Holland on august 30 1866 in Milwaukee.
They had 2 sons and 3 daughters
