Anthony was born in the city of Heerenveen in 1820, and came to America in 1846 in one of the old sailing vessels, it requiring forty days and more to cross the ocean. He settled first in Wisconsin, which has then just beginning to be colonised by white people, who were greatly outnumbered by the red men. In fact Mr. Bouwhuis used to say that it was no infrequent occurrence for him to have his sunday dinner in the company of these children of the forest. Leaving Wisconsin, Mr. Bouwhuis went to Rock Island, Illinois, and in 1865 came to Atkinson, where he opened a general store on State street. He married Maria Theresia Van Landschoot in Moline in 1856. In a book entitled Corn, Commerce, and Country Living by Henry County Illinois, Board of Supervisiors. This paragraph. "In 1868 a circuit riding priest from Rock Island administered to the spiritual needs of the people and said Mass in the Anthony Bouwhuis home. Land for the first church building, a small unimpressive wooden structure with a weather vane steeple, built by the local people at the cost of $1,200 , was donated by Mr. Bouwhuis.
He married Delphine Hyndricxk in 1865 , his first wife died about 1863.
