Birth: Jan. 13, 1701
Plymouth County

Death: Jan. 1, 1777
Windham County
Connecticut, USA

Joseph Allen, Sr., s. of Samuel Allen and his second wife Mary Pratt, b. Jan. 13, 1700/1 at Bridgewater, Mass. He d. Jan. 1, 1777 at Windham, Conn., 76.

Joseph is the eldest half-brother of Timothy Allen interred at Mansfield, Conn. Both were grandsons of Deacon Samuel Allen, Jr. and Sarah Partridge of Bridgewater, Mass.
Timothy was the son of their father's first wife Rebecca Cary, and Joseph by their father's second wife Mary, whose maiden name was NOT Alden, and NOT the granddau. of John Alden and Priscilla Mullens, as speculatively claimed by Mitchell in the History of Bridgewater, Mass. then repeated as speculation in the 1867 Alden Memorial.

On Apr. 29, 1729 at Norwich, Conn., Joseph was married by Rev. Salmon Treat of Preston, Conn. to Rebecca Fuller, dau. of Sgt. Samuel Fuller and Elizabeth Thacher, b. July 22, 1701 at Mansfield, Conn. She d. at Windham, Conn. May 18, 1778, 77. Through their mother Rebecca, all of the children of Joseph Allen and Rebecca Fuller (Sgt. Samuel,4 Lieut. Samuel,3 Dr. Mathew,2 Edward,1) are descendants of Mayflower passenger Edward Fuller.

Joseph and Rebecca had the following children, the first two b. of record at Norwich, the rest of record at Windham, Conn.:

i. Barnabas Allen, b. Feb. 24, 1728/9, d. Oct. 10, 1815 at Canterbury, Conn.; m. Apr. 21, 1752 at Windham, Conn., his 1st cousin, Elizabeth Fuller, dau. of Rhodolphus Fuller and his first wife Mary Hall. She was b. Nov. 7, 1728 at Mansfield, Conn. and d. at Canterbury, Conn. June 9, 1815. Six children recorded at Canterbury.

ii. Jemima Allen, b. Oct. 24, 1731; m. Sept. 26, 1768 at Canterbury, Conn. as his 2nd wife, Nathaniel Clark, s. of Theophilus and Martha Clark. He was b. Mar. 29, 1730 at Canterbury. They had at least two children. By his first wife, Thankful Gates, Nathaniel had eight children; by the early 1800s five of the sons (four by Thankful and one by Jemima) settled at Middletown, Vermont.

iii. Betty Allen, b. Nov. 25, 1734; m. Jan. 16, 1760 at Canterbury, Conn., Benjamin Morse. Seven children of record at Canterbury. The family not traced further.

iv. Mary Allen, b. Nov. 24, 1736; she did NOT marry as his 2nd wife, her half 1st cousin Rev. Timothy Allen, Jr., the son of her father's half-brother Timothy. Frank Bowditch Dexter's biography of Rev. Timothy Allen, Jr. of the Yale Class of 1734 is flawed; Dexter did not understand that Rev. Allen m. as his actual second wife, the widow Dorothy (Gallup) Read of Norwich at Ashford, Conn. Jan. 6, 1761, and not a Mary Allen in 1772. Dorothy was still the wife of Rev. Allen when she d. Sept. 3, 1804 at Chesterfield, Mass. On the other hand, Mary Allen, dau. of Joseph of Windham, was likely the Mary Allen who m. Oct. 6, 1772 at the Scotland Society Chh. as his first wife, Timothy Allen of Lebanon, Conn., s. of Joshua Allen and Margaret Hutchinson. He was b. Sept. 28, 1747 at Lebanon and d. Aug. 11, 1827 at Somers, Conn. They had one known child, s. Ephraim, b. of record at Windham on Nov. 7, 1776. This latter Timothy Allen of Lebanon undoubtedly m. 2) on Nov. 21, 1780 at the Scotland Society, Mary Burnham, and had at least nine children by her at Lebanon and Somers, Conn. Their marriage is also repeated in the Lebanon vital records. As no evidence can be found for Mary (Allen) Allen or her son Ephraim beyond the latter's birth, the memorialist assumes that Mary and her son died in or soon after Nov. 1776.

v. Joseph Allen, Jr., b. Apr. 9, 1739, d. Aug. 28, 1815 at Windham, Conn.; m. Mar. 11, 1761 at Windham, Rebeckah Robinson, dau. of Joseph Robinson and Mehitable Read, and gr.dau. of Peter Robinson, Sr. of Windham, Conn. She was b. Dec. 1, 1737 at Windham and d. there Nov. 17, 1819. Nine children of record at Windham.

vi. Samuel Allen, b. of record Mar. 10, 1740/1, bapt. by Rev. Ebenezer Devotion Apr. 9, 1741 at the Scotland Society Ch., and d. at 5 weeks of age Apr. 14, 1741. His gravestone understates his actual date of death by one full year while claiming he was the first person buried at the Old Scotland Cemetery. However, at least one person with a standing gravestone at the same cemetery was buried there nearly a year before Samuel was born.

vii. Asahel Allen, b. Nov. 16, 1742, d. Mar. 19, 1825 at Windham, Conn.; m. Jan. 24, 1765 at Windham, Desire Eames (q.v. Ames), dau. of Anthony Eames and Anna Barker of Voluntown, Conn. She was b. of record Oct. 15, 1745 at Voluntown and d. at Windham, Conn. Nov. 2, 1820. Eight children of record at Windham and three at Canterbury, Conn.

A flawed and puffed-up outline concerning Joseph Allen, Sr. was pub. in 1910 (Vol. 4, Genealogical and Memorial History of the State of New Jersey, p. 1670).
