Capt. Arnold commanded Company H. of the Third Iowa Infantry, which was located in Oskaloosa, Iowa. On June 20th, 1916 they answered the call of duty and responded to the Mexican Border and in July of 1916 were sent to Brownsville, Texas. In federal service he was sent to France during World War I, as a 1st Lt., with the 56th Infantry Brigade of the 28th Division as Aide-de-Camp
He later became the first Commander of the Harry L. Anderson Post 34, of the American Legion of Oskaloosa.
In 1921 he became Commander of Troop H, of the 113th Iowa Cavalry. He was also a member in good standing in the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was awarded the Mexican Border Service medal, the Iowa State Mexican Border Service medal, the World War I Victory medal with Aisne-Marne, Oise-Aisne, Muese-Argonne, and Defensive Sector battle clasps and the Iowa State World War I service medal.
