Chief Torpedoman Berger first joined the United States Navy in May of 1919. He served honorably for 30 years finally retiring in July of 1949. He was a World War II navy veteran. He saw shore duty at the Submarine Base in Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii; Norfolk, Virginia; Cavite, Philippine Island; and Naval Torpedo School, Newport, Rhode Island. He saw sea duty on the USS S-11, USS Delaware, USS New Jersey, USS Borie, USS Dobbin, USS Augusta, USS J. Fred Talbott, USS Chewink and the USS Salt Lake City. On August 1, 1927, he was commended by Captain F.C. Martin. His citation reads: "Commended by Commander Submarines, Pearl Harbor, T.H., for excellent work during the Gunnery Year, 1926-1927, in overhauling and adjusting torpedoes of Submarines, R-1 to R-20, inclusive." He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct medal with second award 1932 pin. 
Cremated, Location of ashes is unknown.
