Master Sgt. Baker first joined the United States Marine Corps, in November of 1937, at the USMC recruiting station in Seattle, Washington. His assignments included: Base Air Detachment Two, Fleet Marine Force (FMF), NAS San Diego; Headquarters and 2nd Marine Group, FMF, Ewa Oahu, Territory of Hawaii; Headquarter Squadron, FMF Cherry Point, North Carolina; Headquarters and Air Engineers, El Toro, California; VMF-223, USS Leyte CV-32, New York, NY; and VMF-115 San Francisco, California. He was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon Bar, American Defense Service medal with Base clasp, American Campaign medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with 4 bronze service stars, World War II Victory medal, National Defense Service medal, China Service medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon Bar, Philippine Republic Ribbon Bar, Presidential Korean Service Unit Citation Badge, Korean Service medal with one bronze service star, United Nations Service medal and the Marine Good Conduct medal with four awards. He was both a World War II and a Korean War veteran.
