Sunday Aiello, 87, a WWII Bronze Star recipient, formerly of Scottdale, died Wednesday afternoon, at Allegheny Lutheran Home, Hollidaysburg, where he was a resident since 2004.
He was born in Scottdale, a son of the late Angelio and Calaguria Aiello. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Catherine (Vujanovich) Aiello in 2002.
Surviving are his loving and devoted children: Steven M. Aiello in South Carolina, Catherine Ann Pervoy and husband, James, and Carl Lynn Aiello and wife, Valerie, all of Scottdale, Earl Alan Aiello and wife, Fran, of Chambersburg and David J. Aiello and wife, Diane, of Roaring Spring; two grandchildren: Jeremy Thomas Aiello and Lauren Marie Aiello; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Guy Aiello (July 1, 2002), Sebastian S. "Busty" Aiello (Feb. 27, 2005), and Angelo E. Cornmore (March 30, 2007); and a sister, Rose McDonald (Feb. 9, 1989).
Sunday was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Scottdale. He retired as a loading dock supervisor with Brown-Boveri, South Greensburg, after 40 years of service.
He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, European, African, Middle Eastern Service Medal with five bronze stars, and attained the rank of staff sergeant. After his honorable discharge, he then enlisted for 13 years in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, 110th Infantry 28th Division, Scottdale.
Sunday served for a number of years as 4th Ward Councilman for Scottdale Borough. He was a member of the Scottdale VFW Post 7781 and the Scottdale Elks BPOE Lodge 777.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Frank Kapr Funeral Home Inc., 417 W. Pittsburgh St., Scottdale. A blessing service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Church of St. John the Baptist, Scottdale, by the Rev. Leonard W. Stoviak.
Committal services and interment will follow in St. John Parish Cemetery, Scottdale, with full military honors accorded at the gravesite by the Southmoreland Veterans Association.
